June 8, 2009 — Houston-based Star Security Systems filed for federal bankruptcy protection on Monday, just days after a federal judge issued a summary judgment against the company in a case brought by several banks alleging malfunctions in the company's line of computerized bank vaults.

One plaintiff, Prince George Regional Credit Union of Tallahassee, Fla., alleged that the company failed to act on a well-known computer malfunction that kept credit union customers from being able to access their safety deposit boxes for two weeks, last fall.

Company officials pledged to fix the problems, but the waiting list is hundreds of banks long and Star acknowledged that it could be several years before all the vaults are fixed.
